West Downs - The Heritage Resort

"A Century Old Property", or "A more than a Century Old Property" Tracking back, West Downs has been in existence since late 1800's according to official records, making it one of the oldest resorts in Ooty. Ambiguity still prevails as to when the resort was first built. A historical landmark building from the 19th century, built during the British rule in Ootacamund. This British bungalow bore the name West Downs. West Downs is a name passed down through generations. The present owner purchased West Downs from The CommonWealth Trust Ltd. in 1991. To preserve the vintage value of the resort the name was retained and now renamed as West Downs - The Heritage Resort In terms of architecture, the building/structure still boasts/bears/emanates the Victorian-style design with brick walls and predominantly in red and white colors. In an effort to preserve the cultural attributes of the property a major part of both exteriors and interiors were retained, by way of restoring, refurbishing, and renovating for commercial purposes. Some parts of the interiors were maintained too, like fireplaces, ceilings, and windows. In a book by "Ootacamund A History" by Frederick Price, "West Downs" is mentioned in page 534, under the list of properties in 1905, hence showing that West Downs was in existence in 1905, and it's a landmark property. West Downs Heritage Resort is one of the best resorts in Ooty. Railway Station is 2 km away, while Coimbatore International Airport is a 3-hour drive from the resort. Popular places to visit in the city are Ooty Lake (2 km), Botanical Gardens (3 km), Rose Garden (4 km), Doddabetta Peak (over 10 km) and Pykara Lake (21 km).
